THE ULTIMATE TRAVEL GUIDE TO BALI SURF

Are you going to Bali to surf? But don’t know where to find the best breaks? My boyfriend Dave has surfed most of the breaks in Bali and can easily tell you which ones are the best! 😉 So don’t worry I’ve got you covered! I’ve put together Ultimate Guide to Bali Surf! Where you can find all the information about the best surf spots in Bali, surf conditions, best tide to surf and many more.

Uluwatu and Bukit have one of the best surf spots in Bali and also in the world! So Uluwatu and Bukit are undoubtedly the epicenters of surfing in Bali! The surfer crowd comprises primarily of intermediate and advanced surfers, but beginners will also find their surf spots to step up their surfing game. For more information about Uluwatu surf and Bukit surfing check out my Uluwatu Surfing – A Complete Guide.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for information about surfing in Canggu see The Complete Guide to Canggu Surf. To make it easier for you I have also put together The Ultimate Travel Guide to Canggu, where you will find useful information about things to do, best cafes and restaurants, places to stay, and many more.

Before I dive into detailed info about individual surf spots, let’s take a look at my boyfriend’s surf app Ripspy with daily surf video reports from Bali, whether you should buy or rent a surfboard and determine your surf level.

RIPSPY APP

My boyfriend Dave and our friend have recently launched RipSpy App that brings you daily video surf reports from surf spots all around Bali. From each break, you will get to see daily at least 4 video reports with current surfing conditions. It will save you tons of time driving from one spot to another looking for the perfect wave. If you have been to Bali you know how much of a hassle the traffic can be. Not only it is chaotic, but you will breathe in a lot of pollution coming from the exhaustion systems, fires by the side of the road, etc. It also includes information about tide, the number of people in the water and many more.

You can choose between Basic Account and paid Subscription, which will be charged either monthly or every 6-months. With Basic Account you will see only information about the spot and preview of the uploaded video report. Hence, I highly recommend you to go for a subscription as you will reap all the benefits of the app. Don’t worry if you choose a subscription you will get a 3-day free trial before charging your credit card. This way you can test the app free of charge and without any risks.

The RipSpy App is available both for iPhone and Android. You can download it on the Apple Store and Google Play.

RENTING OR BUYING A SURFBOARD

It all comes to how serious you are about surfing. Do you wanna give it a shot and see if you like it, and potentially surf a couple of times while in Bali? Or are you serious about surfing?

If you are someone who falls into the first group then I would rent a surfboard. It is relatively cheap. It will cost you 50k IDR per day, which is not even $1 USD.

However, if you fall into the second group then you definitely wanna buy a surfboard. You can either buy your surfboard secondhand, or a brand new from a surf shop. Or, and this might be the best option, to have your surfboard custom made. There are so many good shapers in Bali shaping surfboards for relatively cheap. It costs approx. 4,2-4,5 mio IDR, which is around $300 USD. The shaper that Dave uses is Komang Sudarma, you can drop him a message on his Instagram.

BALI SURF SPOTS

MEDEWI BALI SURF

Medewi is a volcanic black sand beach with sand bottom located 80 km northwest of Kuta with a 2-3 hour drive. Thus, it might be best to spend a night or possibly even a few there. The place has a Southern California vibe. It offers two beach breaks with righthander and one consistent point break with lefthander.

Medewi is famous for one of the longest lefthanders in Bali. Yet, compared to other spots in Bali, it doesn’t get very crowded. On a good day, the point break can break for up to 500 m long rides. Hence, it is worth the trip. However, do not expect to spend much time in a barrel. It is rather a great spot with fun, long and workable wave suitable for intermediate surfers and advanced surfers. The swell there is consistent and usually smaller than in Balian but bigger than in Kuta. In case the spot gets busy there’s always a number of river mounts that you can surf.

MEDEWI SURF BREAK OVERVIEW

Difficulty level: beginners and intermediate
Side: left point break and right and left beach break
Best Tide: mid to high
Bottom: cobbles and stones
Wave avg. size: 4-6 ft
Best month for surfing: April, May, June, July, August

BALIAN BALI SURF

Balian Beach with its black sand is one of the most beautiful beaches in the western part of Bali. It is located south of the town of Antosari around 2 hours drive from Kuta at the river mouth of the Balian river. One of the largest rivers in Bali.

Balian river mouth rock shelf peak offers both lefthander and righthander. When waves get big, new peaks tend to open on the outsides. Under right conditions, it offers on both sides barrels and long walls. However, the lefts tend to be longer and better shaped than the rights. The break holds swells from knee-high to triple overhead. It is one of the most forgiving surf spots in Bali and oftentimes it is bigger than other west coast surf breaks.
Be aware of the strong current. Often it will take you to the right. Do not swim against it as you will only get fatigued. Instead, just paddle out. The best season for surfing is the dry season but it works all year. However, during the wet season, it is very polluted from the rainwater with woods, plastics, rubbish, etc.

Side: left and right river mouth rock shelf peak

KEDUNGU BALI SURF

Kedungu beach is a beautiful black sand beach located north of Tanah Lot with a 30 min drive from Canggu. Even now it is quite a secluded beach with not many tourists around. There are a few warungs and foods stand at the parking area next to the beach.

Kedungu offers three surf breaks suitable to all levels, including beginners. The main break works best during mid to high tide, but occasionally it can also work on low tide. It offers both lefthander and righthander with righthander being more powerful. While the lefthander is fat and mellow. Besides the main break, there’s also a shore break with a powerful wave suitable for advanced surfers. Overall, Kedungu break has a good and consistent swell. When surfing during low tide be mindful of rocks, shallow water, and sea urchins.

TANAH LOT BALI SURF

Tanah Lot Beach is primarily known for its famous Hindu Temple which sits on a large offshore rock and is one of Bali’s most important landmarks. But what many not know is, it has a great surf break with a really fun wave.

In order to get to the surf spot, you will need to buy a ticket to enter the Tanah Lot Temple area. The surf break is inside a bay which is situated right off the entrance when looking at the Indian Ocean. Getting to the break and out of the break is the hardest. You can access it either by jumping off a cliff or by taking stairs to the beach. You will need to paddle quickly if you decide to jump off the cliff. Otherwise, you will get smashed against the cliff and stones.

The break offers a lefthander with fun and easy wave. The best time to surf is around low and mid-tide. The most consistent swell is during the dry season from May until September. However, it works throughout the year. Usually, it is not crowded. You will rarely see more than two or three surfers in the water at the same time. When surfing be mindful of rocks and reef.

Side: left reef break
Best Tide: low and mid
Bottom: reef and sand
Wave avg. size: 1-3 ft
Best month for surfing: May, June, July, August, September

PERERENAN BALI SURF

Pererenan beach is a famous beach with powerful waves. It has black sand and is located just next to Echo Beach. Pererenan is still a developing area. Therefore, it is a lot quieter than Batu Bolong and Berawa. It is favored primarily by surfers. There are a few local beach bars between the river mouth and Echo Beach, where you can chill in beanbags sip on a cold coconut or cold beer and watch shred waves. During the golden hour, it is a perfect place to watch the sunset.

Pererenan is considered as one of the best surf spots in Bali. It offers both left and right pointbreaks. Both have powerful, fast and oftentimes barreling waves. Its lefthander is considered the best in the area. It is best surfed from mid to high tide. Most importantly, it is less crowded than other surf spots in Canggu.

River Mouth is located just in front of the mouth of the river. It is a righthander with a fast and powerful wave and rippable walls.
Left pointbreak is located just in front of the statue. Best surfing conditions are between mid to high tides but it gets shallow so be cautious about submerged rocks in the water. It is hollow between low to mid-tide.

Besides that, it is also a great spot to watch the sunset with cold coconut or Bintang in hand. During the evening it is a great place to go for a seafood dinner.

Echo Beach has several peaks suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. With its rocky reef, it can be powerful, challenging and even barreling. The best barrels are during low tide as the wave hits the shallow reef. Word of advice is to be cautious about the reef. Watch for boils in the water as they usually indicate a submerged rock in the water. Access to the break is just straight from the shore. The lefthander works best on mid to high tide. During high tide, it gives walls to rip and lips to smack. It is considered the best lefthander in Canggu. It is often crowded.

BATU BOLONG BALI SURF

Batu Bolong in Canggu is a black sandy beach located west of Berawa Beach. It is favored both by tourists and surfers, so there’s plenty of local beach bars to hang out and watch surfers rip some waves. Besides that, it is also a great spot to watch the sunset with cold coconut or Bintang. My favorites ones are just across the street from Old Man’s Bar.

It has two surf breaks – Old Man’s and Left. The fat and slowly moving wave is suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf break can handle some sizable sets so you can expect some long rides. Access to the break is just straight from the shore from Batu Bolong. It is mostly frequented by beginner surfers, surf schools and longboards so it is often crowded. Both surf breaks stretch over sand and reef bottom.

Old Man’s surf break is on the other side of the channel from Batu Bolong, where wave peels slowly over a deep reef. You can expect mellow fat waves, which are easy to get. Thus, it is suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers.

The Left is located just right in front of the road. The lefthander has fat and mellow waves, which are great for intermediate and advanced surfers. It is easy to paddle in and out. Hence, it is often crowded with beginner and intermediate surfers.

BERAWA BALI SURF

Berawa Beach in Canggu is a beautiful beach with black sand and one of the four main breaks in Canggu. It is favored both by tourists and surfers. Therefore, there’s a lot of local beach bars with beanbags to chill out and watch surfers rip some waves. It is also a great spot to watch the sunset with cold coconut or Bintang. Depends on what you prefer. I’m defo team cold coconut whereas my boyfriend Dave is defo team cold Bintang. 😄 My favorite local beach bars are Naked Coconut and Agung’s.

It has mellow right and lefthanders that break over a mixed rocky reef out the back and sand bottom through the inside. The most fun break is the right-hander located just right of the Finns. Access to the break is just straight from the shore. Read the waves, choose the best spot to enter and paddle in and have fun. Oftentimes it gets crowded, and you can have a lot of learners out and about. When the conditions are good you can expect rides from 30 m to 100 m long. The waves are quite fast, but unlikely to barrel.

Thanks to Finn’s Beach Club, Berawa beach offers night surfing. Spotlights are shone into the ocean every night from 6:30 pm until 10:00 pm, and it is free. The lights shine 100 m into the ocean.

BERAWA SURF BREAK OVERVIEW

Bottom: sand bottom with flat rocks
Wave avg. size: 2-4 ft

But most importantly, the accommodation has a very strategic location with within walking distance to many restaurants and the Berawa beach.

SEMINYAK, PETITENGEN, DOUBLE SIX, KU DE BALI SURF

The Seminyak white sand beach is located between Kuta and Canggu. Due to its accessibility and infrastructure, it is one of the most popular surfing spots in Bali. There’s a wide variety of restaurants, accommodations and other entertainments in the area.

The Seminyak surf break is also known as Petitenget, Ku De Ta and Double Six. As it is a beach break it offers both lefthander and righthander. The break is spread across different peaks. Hence, before paddling out, I recommend you to watch a few sets and see where the peaks form and the best waves break. The beach break works best during high tide. Watch out for strong rips as they make it difficult to stay in position.

DOUBLE SIX SURF BREAK OVERVIEW

Difficulty level: beginners and intermediates
Side: right and left beach break
Best Tide: high
Bottom: sand bottom
Wave avg. size: 2-4 ft
Best month for surfing: April, May, June, July, August
Dangers: pollution after rain, rips and crowds

LEGIAN, PADMA BALI SURF

Legian Beach, also known as Padma, is a sandy beach connecting Kuta Beach with Seminyak. It is accessible from the main road Jl. Pantai Kuta. The surf conditions are similar to Kuta Beach. The beach break offers both righthander and lefthander. The lefthander offers walled out sections, whereas when the conditions are right the righthander tends to barrel. It offers fun waves with a consistent swell.

Padma is one of a few spots that works all year round. However, the best months for surfing are from April until August. The beach break is ideal for beginners and intermediates. Before paddling out, I recommend you to watch a few sets. As a result, you should be able to tell where the peaks form and waves break.

Best Tide: mid to high
Bottom: sand bottom

KUTA BEACH BALI SURF

The white sand Kuta Beach is stretching 3 km on the west coast north of the Ngurah Rai International Airport. Since 1930’s it has been bringing surfing to masses. However, it is no longer the tropical idyll what it used to be. These days, Kuta is buried under concrete and shopping malls.

Kuta Beach is one of the best surf spots in Bali for beginners. The surf spot has an exposed beach break, which works best during the dry season, ie. from May until October. As most beach breaks it offers both lefthander and righthander. Because it is one of the most recognizable and visited beaches that Bali has to offer it is often crowded. One of the favorite playgrounds of Bali top surfers is Halways, located at the end of Jl. Padma. It is also home to numerous surf competitions.

The best tide to surf is from mid to high or high tide as the peaky sections offer more turns. The average size of the waves is 1-3 ft. When the conditions are right the waves get fast and consistent.

KUTA BEACH SURF BREAK OVERVIEW

Difficulty level: beginners and intermediates
Side: right and left beach break
Best Tide: mid to high, high
Bottom: sand bottom
Wave avg. size: 1-3 ft
Best month for surfing: May, June, July, August, September, October
Dangers: pollution after rain, rips, and crowds

KUTA REEF BALI SURF

Kuta Reef is a popular surfing spot in Bali, located just at the bottleneck of the Bukit peninsula. In its vicinity, you can find other surf breaks Second, Second Middle, Middle, Airport Rights, and Airport Lefts. It is a long lefthander reef break that offers rides over 150 m. It works during the dry season (from May until October).

During big swell, it comes in even sets of double up followed by occasional great hollow barrels. The wave is quite heavy in the first barrelling section, but then it opens into a long ride with turns. Thus, it is suitable for intermediate or advanced surfers. Nonetheless, smaller days are suitable even for beginners. It is often crowded. If it is too crowded you can paddle to Kuta Second or Kuta Second Middle.

The break is located 800m offshore. Hence, I highly recommend you to hire a local boat. Especially, if you don’t want to paddle for 20 min. My go-to guy is Tana. Give him a shout and tell him you are Dave’s friend, he will give you the best price and surf tips.

KUTA BEACH SURF BREAK OVERVIEW

Difficulty level: bigger days – Intermediate and advanced, smaller days – beginners

SECOND BALI SURF

Kuta Second is another surf peak located between Kuta Reef and Kuta Left. It tends to be bigger than Kuta Reef and less consistent. Hence, it is oftentimes less crowded. It works best around mid-tide.

Similarly, as Kuta Reef, the break is located 800m. Hence, I highly recommend you to hire a local boat. Otherwise, you will need to paddle for 20 min. My go-to guy is Tana. Give him a shout and tell him you are Dave’s friend, he will give you the best price and surf tips.

SECOND MIDDLE BALI SURF

Kuta Second Middle is another spot located near Kuta Reef, just next to Kuta Second. The break changes based on the swell. On bigger days it works as an A-frame. While on smaller days it works only as a lefthander.

Similarly, as other breaks in the area, Second Middle is located 800m offshore. Hence, hiring a local boat is highly recommended if you don’t want to paddle for 20 min. My go-to guy is Tana. Give him a shout and tell him you are Dave’s friend, he will give you the best price and surf tips.

Bottom: shallow reef
Wave avg. size: 4-5 ft
Best month for surfing: May, June, July, August, September
Dangers: shallow reef, rips, and pollution

MIDDLE BALI SURF

Kuta Middle is located just next to Kuta Left. It is one of the best waves in the area, which oftentimes gets bigger than other Kuta reef spots. The high-quality lefthander provides barreling sections. Watch out for occasional closeout sets as they make it very difficult to duck dive and get back to the lineup. The take-off zone is not very fast. However, the wave gets faster when it starts to spin above the reef and at the end, it is really shallow. During windy days the wave gets bumpy so it doesn’t work very well. Kuta Middle is the only spot in Kuta reef area that works during low tide. Often it is crowded.

Like other Kuta reef breaks, Kuta Middle is located 800m offshore. Thus, hiring a local boat is highly recommended. Especially, if you don’t want to paddle for 20 min. My go-to guy is Tana. Give him a shout and tell him you are Dave’s friend, he will give you the best price and surf tips.

KUTA AIRPORT LEFT BALI SURF

Airport Left is located just at the end of the Ngurah Rai International Airport runway. The lefthander stretches over a sharp reef with stones. It will most likely closeout around midsized swell. However, during high tide and the right conditions, it offers open rippable wall for 60 m. The wave is shallow with a consistent swell. Often it gets crowded. It is more exposed than Airport Rights and Kuta Reef so it can be affected by a crosswind.

Similarly, as other Kuta reef breaks, Kuta Middle is located 800m offshore. Hence, hiring a local boat is highly recommended. Especially, if you don’t want to paddle for 20 min. My go-to guy is Tana. Give him a shout and tell him you are Dave’s friend, he will give you the best price and surf tips.

Airport Right is located just at the end of the Ngurah Rai International Airport runway. The best surfing conditions are around high tide, with no wind and decent swell. It offers a high-quality righthander with long rides of 100m that occasionally barrel. Even though the wave is inconsistent it is really good for turns and airs and can get very shallow. Oftentimes, it gets crowded.

Like other Kuta reef breaks, Airport Left is located 800m offshore. Hence, hiring a local boat is highly recommended. Especially, if you don’t want to paddle for 20 min. My go-to guy is Tana. Give him a shout and tell him you are Dave’s friend, he will give you the best price and surf tips.

TORO TORO BALI SURF

Toro Toro is an easy righthander located south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, which works best on low tide with a bigger swell. The wave breaks softly and slowly into deep water. It has an easy takeoff and easy paddle back to the lineup. Hence, it is perfect for beginners and intermediates. During high tide, the wave doesn’t break very well.

Same as other Kuta reef breaks, Toro Toro is located 800m offshore. Thus, I highly recommend you to hire a local both. Especially, if you don’t want to paddle for 20 min. My go-to guy is Tana. Give him a shout and tell him you are Dave’s friend, he will give you the best price and surf tips.

JIMBARAN BALI SURF

Jimbaran surf spot is located in Jimbaran bay just south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport. It is an easy beach break ideal for beginners. The beach break has two breaks. The first one is situated in-front of warungs whereas the second one is in front of Four Seasons Hotel. It works best during the high tide when everywhere else in Bukit it is too big. On mid-tide and low tide, it is too small. Even for beginners and longboards.

JIMBARAN HONEYMOONERS BALI SURF

Jimbaran Honeymooners is a secret spot in Jimbaran located near Jl. Tegal Wangi. It is accessible only by foot by bumpy and rocky track. You will need to leave your bike by the main road at the beginning of the track. The walk to the spot takes around 15 min but it is definitely worth it.

The reef break is located just below a cliff. You can access it either by jumping off the cliff, it is approximately a 3-5 m fall, or from a tiny white sand beach. If you choose to enter from the beach you will need to paddle to the break. The paddle is relatively easy and takes around 5 min. However, exiting the spot is difficult as the sharp uneven reef and stones make walking on the reef during the big swell very difficult. Don’t underestimate the reef as oftentimes, surfers cut themselves against the reef. Hence, this spot is for intermediate surfers only.

It works on mid-tide and only during a big swell. Otherwise, it is flat. The break offers a lefthander suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers.

BALANGAN BALI SURF

Balangan Beach in Bukit is a very beautiful beach with white sand. It is favored both by tourists and surfers. However, it is also a popular destination for weddings and wedding photoshoots.

There’s a lot of local beach bars (warungs) scattered along the shore with daybeds for which unfortunately you need to pay. The price is usually around 50k IDR per day. But, they tend to ask for more so don’t be afraid to bargain. The daybeds are perfect for chilling, sunbathing and taking in the stunning views of the Indian Ocean. Hence, it is a great spot to watch sunset either with coconut or Bintang in hand. Depends on what you prefer. Teresa is defo team cold coconut whereas Dave is defo team cold Bintang. 😄

Balangan Beach is definitely one of the top class surf spots in Bali! It has a fast and hollow lefthander that is often sectiony close-out. It has the main take-off area, yet you can take off anywhere along the line and get a decent ride.

The access is from shore in front of one of the many warungs. Read the waves, choose the best spot to enter and paddle in and have fun. It is a game-changer when you get the right swell direction, tide height 0.4 – 1.4 m, and tide co-efficient. However, the real fun starts with overhead to double overhead. Hence, it doesn’t work well on smaller days. The vibe is slightly more relaxed and it’s less crowded than the surrounding breaks.

BALANGAN SURF BREAK OVERVIEW

Difficulty level: all levels, especially intermediate and big boards
Side: left
Best Tide: all tides
Bottom: worn-out reef
Wave avg. size: 2-3 ft
Best month for surfing: April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November

MID-PRICE – La Joya Biu Biu Resort – is another great place to stay in Balangan! Located right on the beach makes this a perfect place to stay for surfers! The resort has two infinity pools and a private beach, free WiFi, free parking and a restaurant where they serve both local and international dishes.

BUDGET – Absolute Beachfront Balangan Apartments – is a great place if you are on a tight budget, but want to be based on the beachfront overlooking the surf break and the Indian Ocean. The rooms are modest but equipped with AC and a wardrobe. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are shared.

DREAMLAND BALI SURF

Dreamland Beach in Bukit is a very beautiful beach with white sand. Favored both by tourists and surfers alike. The beach break is located just in front of shops and a big hotel resort. There are a few warungs on the beach where you can get a drink and a meal. Hence, it comes as no surprise that it is a very crowded beach.

Dreamland Beach has two different peaks, one lefthander and one righthander. Both peaks are not too challenging, therefore they are suitable for all levels of surfers. In general, the rides are shorter. On big days the break can barrel but on small days there’s a fat shore break. It has a sandy reef bottom and occasionally it gets crowded.

DREAMLAND SURF BREAK OVERVIEW

Difficulty level: all levels
Side: left and right
Best Tide: high
Bottom: sandy with rocks
Wave avg. size: 2-4 ft

WHERE TO STAY IN DREAMLAND BEACH?

Moreover, they have a small gym on-site too.

BUDGET – Taman Asih Bingin Homestay – is located between Dreamland beach and Binging beach. The rooms are simple and equipped with a wardrobe and depending on the type of room a fan or an AC. I recommend you to book Deluxe Room as it tends to be nicer than the other options. However, be aware that the bathrooms are not very nice.

BINGIN BALI SURF

Bingin Beach with its white sand might be the most beautiful beach on the Bukit peninsula. Similarly, like its neighboring Dreamland Beach, it is favored both by tourists and surfers.

The surf break hiding behind a series of guest houses clinging to the cliff is somewhat of a hidden gem. Finding the way to the beach might be a bit tricky but all you need to do is find a way to carpark and a path leading down to the beach. Once on a beach, there’s a number of guesthouses and warungs where you can indulge in a drink or a meal while looking at a stunning view of the Indian Ocean. If you are staying for the golden hour you might want to stay for a seafood barbecue at Lucky Fish. The best seafood on the island. So good.

The Bingin Beach is a sharp and short lefthander, which is considered as barrel playground. For barrel seekers, it works best around mid and low tides. More water on the reef makes less hollow and more convenient waves, suitable even for beginners and intermediate surfers. You can expect short rides but no more than 50 m. Frequently it is crowded with a tight take-off zone.

THE IMPOSSIBLES BALI SURF

The Impossibles is one of the famous surf spots in Bali. The beach is situated under a steep cliff with a breathtaking view of the Indian Ocean. The access to the beach is a bit tricky. From a parking lot, you need to walk down an uneven and steep staircase for around 10 minutes. There’s a newly built guesthouse so the access is much easier than it used to be. Or you can paddle there from Padang Padang. The guesthouse has a beautiful view of the ocean. Thus it is the perfect place to watch surfers rip waves and to have a meal or a drink.

The Impossibles is a pointbreak located between Binging and Padang Padang. The wave is very fast and long. It is spinning above a beautiful reef, which usually separates the break into three sections. If you make it through all of them, you can catch one of your longest lefts in Bali. Nonetheless, the wave is not made much for turns, but rather for constant pumping. It works on all tides, but best is mid to low and low to mid. Suitable for advanced surfers.

PADANG PADANG BALI SURF

Padang Padang Beach is one of the famous surf points in Bali and together with Uluwatu provides one of the best surfing in Bukit. Hence, it is popular with surfers from around the world, who come here to rip the waves. Moreover, it’s where the famous Padang Padang competition takes place. The beach is situated under a steep cliff with a stunning view of the Indian Ocean. There are no local beach bars or warungs on the beach. Only locals walking on the beach and selling stuff.

Padang Padang works best during the dry season. It has two breaks Padang Padang Right, also known as Baby Padang, and Padang Padang Left, also known as Balinese Pipeline.

The Baby Padang is suited for beginners and intermediates. It is a short ride with only a few turns that takes you back to the channel for an easy paddle back to the lineup. It works pretty much on all tides.

While the lefthander is were all the fun happens. It has one of the world-class lefthanders, which works only on bigger swells. Hence, it is suited for advanced surfers only. On good days it offers a long ride and if you are lucky you can ride all the way to neighboring surf break The Impossibles. During low swell, the break is really sketchy. As it draws more water off the shallow coral it offers perfect barrel conditions with rides up to 100 m long over the reef.

ULUWATU BALI SURF

Uluwatu Beach stretching underneath a stunning cliff is the most beautiful and famous place in Bali. It is one of the best places to surf. Hence, it is very popular among surfers from around the world, who come here to rip the waves and compete in famous competitions.

On the cliff, you can find a lot of local warungs as well as my favorite place Single Fin, where you can chill, watch surfers rip waves and have some drinks and meals. Single Fin has the best views of the world-famous Uluwatu surf break and the Indian Ocean. Thus, it is the place if you want to watch surfers rip waves while treating yourself with a delicious meal, drink or coffee. Next door is an infinity pool with sunbeds overlooking the surf spots. Ultimately the best place to chill and watch surfers rip the face.

Uluwatu is one of the most consistent surfing spots in Bali and one of the most famous surf spots in the world. It offers long rides ranging from 50 to 300 m and barrels with many playful sections including the Temples, the Bombie, the Peak, the Outside corner, and the Racetrack. But above all, Uluwatu works on all tides. So it is almost never flat. It becomes crowded at 2-5 ft when waves are do-able. The only convenient entry and exit point are through famous The Uluwatu Cave. Generally, there’s a current that runs from South to North so the trick is it to approach The Cave from the South (towards the Temples). Suitable for advanced surfers.

NYANG NYANG BALI SURF

Nyang Nyang Beach is located on one of the most beautiful coastlines of Bali and yet it is one of the least disturbed beaches in Bali. It might be because it is not easily accessible. In order to reach the beach, you will need to take a steep climb on a very long staircase, which deters many tourists and hence ensures smaller to no crowd. There are no warungs or vendors down on the beach so you might wanna take a bottle of water and some snacks with you.

Nyang Nyang is the place to go during a smaller swell, as the wave is always bigger than anywhere else. Yes, it is one of those waves when it is flat there then it is flat everywhere else. It offers both lefthander and righthander. The righthander reef break works once the tide is up. It is short and spicy. Please note that waves are usually bigger than what it seems from the cliffs. The best wind direction is from the north and swell direction is from the southwest. The rip currents are strong and king waves may occasionally appear, thus Nyang Nyang is for advanced surfers only.

GREEN BALL BALI SURF

Green Ball oftentimes misspelled as Greenbowl or Green Bowl is one of the most beautiful spots in Bali. It is located at the bottom of a long steep cliff path. To reach the beach you need to take a steep staircase. It takes around 10-15 minutes to reach the beach. The beach is quite secluded and not very busy. There are no local beach bars or warungs down on the beach so you might wanna take a bottle of water and some snacks with you.

Green Ball is an exposed beach break which offers both righthander and lefthander divided by a strong current. Don’t take the current lightly, because Green Ball is known for one of the strongest currents in Bali. It makes it hard to stay in position and to get out of water. Left works best with low tide, while the right works with all kind of tides. I recommend you to hit the morning glass as during the day it often gets crowded. Also, watch out for rips and rocks.

PANDAWA BALI SURF

Once a secluded beach behind large carved limestone cliffs with stunning views of the Indian Ocean is nowadays one of the biggest attraction of many tourists. As a huge cut has been made to the cliffs to make way for smooth asphalt roads which lead down to the beach. There’re buses full of Chinese tourists coming every day.

The beach is divided into two parts. The left one which is still pristine and is accessible primarily during low tide. Nonetheless, you can access it during high tide too, but most likely you will get hit and splashed by waves. The right side is full of local warungs, and surfboard and kayak rentals. That’s also where the parking lot is located.

Pandawa Beach has a heavy wave with all different sections. The good lefthander is accessible by a channel that will help you get to the surf spot. It is longer than the righthander. High tide causes sideway rip, which requires a lot of paddling in order for you to stay in a position. Hence, this spot is definitely not for beginners, it is suitable for advanced surfers. The best tide is mid to high or high to mid.

Nikko is still a heavy righthander, located in front of Hilton Hotel in Nusa Dua. During a bigger swell, it is barreling and is thus suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. Whereas, during head high to overhead conditions, the wave is suitable for beginners.

GEGER BEACH BALI SURF

Geger Beach is located in Nusa Dua, a popular tourist destination for holidays. Nusa Dua is known for luxury resorts with beautiful white-sand beaches. There’s a lot of watersports you can do, such as surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and jet skiing. Most of the restaurants and beach bars on the beach belong to the resorts, so expect resort prices.

The open ocean reef break located 200 m from shore is best accessible by boat (50k IDR one way), but you can also paddle. However, the long-distance and strong current makes it hard to paddle. Geger is a righthander which tends to be bigger than other surf spots on the east coast. The break is shallow.

During low tide with a decent swell, you can end up being sucked into 6ft wave on dry reef. Also, on other occasions, you can get dragged underwater for a long period of time and have consecutive sets of waves drop on your head. So make sure you have the skillset to handle it. Consequently, Geger is for advanced surfers only.

There are few other peaks located nearby, Chicken wing and Temples, which provide good quality lefts and rights.

There are so many activities and watersports for you to do. Some peaks are barreling even with smaller swells. During low tide, the reef dries out and gets too shallow so don’t paddle out. However, you will need to hire a local boat. It tends to be quite expensive. Usually around 300-400k depending who you ask. Hence, it is advised to take a boat in a group. Otherwise, it is not worth it.

In the past Serengan used to be a secret spot, but now it is one of the well-known surf breaks in Bali that works the best during the wet season. Due to its recent popularity, it oftentimes gets crowded. It has various lefthanders and righthanders. There’s the main peak and other smaller peaks on the outside separated by small channels which are great for paddling out. The main peak is where all the action happens. It offers big steep walls and sucky pits through tides. During big swell, the righthander turns into a big barrel. The smaller peaks offer softer shoulders suitable for less skilled surfers.

Hyatt Reef is a long righthander often hollow that breaks over a shallow reef. It is a bit sectiony with three peaks, Outer Peak, Main Peak and Inside Peak. The Outer Peak is around 100 m paddle from the Main Peak and is known for short, steep and hollow waves. Under the right conditions, the peak connects with other sections. The Main Peak is right in front of Hyatt Hotel and offers soft shoulders and open bowls with barrels. The inside peak is most consistent. It offers soft shoulder that closeouts in deep water. Unlike other breaks in the area, Hyatt Reef doesn’t get as crowded.

It has an abundance of restaurants, accommodation and many watersports such as windsurfing, wakeboarding, surfing, paragliding, and kitesurfing.

The reef has two peaks Sanur Reef and Tandjung Reef. The Tandjung Reef has both lefthander and righthander. The lefthander breaks soft over an uneven shallow reef and tends to be less crowded. Under right conditions, the righthander connects with Sanur resulting in a hollow and steep long ride. Sanur Reef tends to break on larger swells and work when most breaks in the area are maxed out. The best tide is around mid to high tide.

It is for intermediate and advanced surfers only. Mind the shallow reef as you might end up walking away with exposed flesh. The break is located further offshore so I recommend you to hire a local boat to take you to and back.

The break offers a righthander with long walls great for carves and curves, and easy to set up barreling sections. The wave breaks over a shallow reef and works best during mid to high tide and decent swell. When surfing mind the strong currents that make it difficult to stay in position and metal spikes forget to the reef to grow seaweed. It is the best wave on the island, and yet it is less crowded than other surf breaks in the area.

Shipwrecks is the furthers break on Nusa Lembongan. Paddling out to Shipwrecks is possible, however, it is a long and exhausting paddle. Hence, I recommend you to hire a local boat to take you to and out of the lineup.

The lefthander tends to work better than the righthander and offers conditions for carves and cuts. On bigger days mind the current.
